On January 15, 1908, nine college women at Howard University in Washington, D.C., founded Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Their vision was to create an organization rooted in scholarship, sisterhood, leadership, and service.
The Sorority was established to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women, and maintain a progressive interest in college life.
From those beginnings at Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha grew into an international service organization whose members continue a legacy of leadership, scholarship, sisterhood, and service.
